National CBD Day 2024 : The History Of CBD

In 2018, two important events happened in the world of cannabidiol (CBD). First, the Farm Bill legalized industrial hemp. Next, National CBD Day was born. Every year on August 8, people celebrating National CBD Day can appreciate cannabidiol’s incredible benefits.

CBD exploded in popularity as folks around the nation discovered the ways it can boost their daily routine. People worldwide are enjoying cannabidiol, and maybe someday we’ll even have a global CBD Day! Until then, let’s look at what National CBD Day is and how we can celebrate it.

What Is National CBD Day?

National CBD Day was founded to spread awareness and appreciation for CBD products that help millions of Americans every day (over 45 million, to be exact). The August holiday is more than just a day for discounted products. It represents a new era in the way people approach and research cannabis.

Though CBD’s beneficial properties have been recognized and utilized by humans for millennia, the cannabinoid was only recently legalized in the United States. With all the buzz surrounding CBD, it was only a matter of time before a new holiday would celebrate cannabidiol’s popularity.

It is not the same as April 20, which is a day that many associate with cannabis. National CBD Day focuses on hemp-derived, non-psychoactive cannabidiol rather than marijuana. All types of cannabis are welcome on this national day, but CBD gets the limelight!

The History Of CBD

CBD is a cannabinoid that promotes soothing and focused feelings. Research suggests it may play a role in maintaining the body’s homeostasis or internal balance. Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD does not induce any intoxicating effects.

Although CBD is present in both hemp and marijuana plants, hemp is used for CBD extraction. This is because hemp has naturally high levels of cannabidiol and low amounts of THC.

Per federal regulations, THC levels in hemp must remain below (0.3% or less). This ensures hemp-derived CBD products don’t produce a “high.”

How Does CBD work?

CBD relaxes the body and clears the mind by interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Almost every mammal has an ECS. The system plays a significant role in our mood, alertness, appetite, pain levels, and more. We can give our ECS a helping hand with cannabidiol.

When you take CBD, it interacts with cannabinoid receptors in our body (CB1 and CB2). These receptors are located in our brains, on our skin, and throughout our peripheral organs. CBD interacts with these receptors and boosts the ECS’s functionality.

The Discovery of CBD

Researchers “discovered” CBD in the 1940s, though humans have reaped its benefits for millennia. In the 1800s, we began investigating what compounds make up the complex and versatile cannabis plant. CBD was named in the 1940s, and its structure was determined in 1963.

A mere seven years after scientists identified CBD, Congress passed the Controlled Substances Act in 1970. This bill outlawed all cannabis, including hemp. Today, we distinguish between hemp and marijuana because hemp does not induce a high. However, this fact didn’t matter decades ago. Since the government prohibited all cannabis, people could not use CBD.

On December 20th, 2018, the Farm Bill legalized hemp. Marijuana, a cannabis plant containing more than 0.3%, is still federally illegal. Since the Farm Bill also legalized products made from hemp, CBD finally got its recognition!

Types Of CBD And Their Uses

Since the CBD industry began growing in earnest, a wide variety of products have hit the market. Since CBD is so popular, people from all walks of life have found a use for this natural cannabinoid. You can purchase CBD hair pomade, nail polish, toothpicks, and even pillows.

When browsing a CBD website or walking through a wellness store, it can be overwhelming to see so many products. Get a form of CBD that you can easily integrate into your routine. The most important thing to remember before making your decision is that the product should suit your needs.

For example, if you’d like to incorporate CBD into your exercise routine, some products may be better than others. While smoking CBD flower is a great way to relieve tension, it might not be best enjoyed after a strenuous exercise. A CBD salve would be ideal for muscle relief and body fatigue.

In addition to choosing the ideal product to fit your needs, you should also be mindful of the type of CBD extract the product contains. You can purchase either full-spectrum or broad-spectrum CBD products.

Full-spectrum products contain trace amounts of THC (0.3% or less) while broad-spectrum products contain no THC whatsoever. Some people prefer full-spectrum CBD because the THC contributes to an overall stronger effect. However, broad-spectrum products are still potent, and they completely eliminate the risk of a positive drug test.

History Of National CBD Day

The national day was founded by cbdMD, a CBD manufacturer from North Carolina. In 2018, they applied with National Day Calendar for CBD to have its own holiday. The National Day Calendar committee receives over 20,000 applications a year, but they recognized CBD’s impact and approved the request.

Hemp was not legal when cbdMD thought cannabidiol should be nationally appreciated, but they noticed that CBD was gaining popularity. Sensing that the legalization of hemp-derived CBD was just around the corner, they submitted their application before the Farm Bill was signed.

Once the Farm Bill became law, CBD products were even more widely available and in demand. The total American CBD product sales in 2018 were $535 million. In 2019, that number jumped to $845 million, and since then, it has been climbing by at least $303 million every year.

This incredible acceptance of CBD not only speaks to the cannabinoid’s wellness benefits but also society’s mainstream acceptance of holistic products. National CBD Day is a testament to people’s ability to support what works. Even though it took 80 years for CBD to get the appreciation it deserves, it is better late than never!

When Is National CBD Day 2022?

In 2021, National CBD Day is August 8. The holiday falls on the eighth of every year, so be sure to mark your calendar. This will be the fourth annual celebration of this new and exciting holiday.

There have been attempts to celebrate cannabis on other days, such as April 20 or July 10. Though 7/10 looks like “OIL” (as in CBD oil) upside down, neither July 10 nor April 20 became an actual national holiday. National CBD Day is the first cannabis holiday to be officially recognized and celebrated.

This year, August 8 falls on a Sunday. Did you know that International Beer Day is on August 7? With two important holidays landing back to back on a summer weekend, you’ll want to keep your schedule clear!

How To Celebrate National CBD Day in 2022!

Celebrate National CBD Day this year by appreciating cannabidiol in whatever way feels best to you. For others, it could mean a CBD-themed picnic or party.

Or perhaps you’d like to experience nature as you enjoy CBD. Since cannabidiol is a natural substance, using CBD outdoors can be a soothing reminder that its many wellness benefits come from the Earth. So, take your CBD under a wide-open sky, atop a mountain, next to the beach, in a lush forest, or just on a walk around the block.

Other National Cannabis Holiday To Remember

National CBD Day is just one of the holidays that celebrates cannabis culture. With social media, we can spread the love for hemp far and wide. Whether you’re looking to snag a deal on some products, appreciate cannabis, or all of the above, there’s CBD appreciation year-round!

While 4/20 and 7/10 may not be official holidays, they are still excellent days to enjoy hemp products. April 20 is especially famous, and since 7/10 resembles “OIL,” it is tradition to focus on oils and concentrates on July 10. While there are not many more national days of cannabis appreciation, there are some months:

  • October: National Pet CBD Month (#NationalPetCBDMonth)
  • April: National Cannabis Awareness Month (#CannabisAwarenessMonth)
  • July: National Hemp Month (#NationalHempMonth)

Lastly, we’d like to suggest October 5 as a celebration of cannabis’s legality. On 10/5, 1937, Samuel R. Caldwell and Moses Baca were the first citizens arrested for possessing cannabis. This day is about honoring the hardships that countless people have faced (and still do) in regards to cannabis penalties.
